SUVCW Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Sons on Union Veterans of the Civil War
Overview
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War award two scholarships each year, each worth $2,500 for tuition and books. These scholarships are available to high school seniors and current college students of any gender, provided the recipient is enrolled at an accredited four-year college or university before December 31 of the year the award is issued.
Eligibility and expectations
- Applicants must show a history of achievement in academics and community involvement (see page 4).
- Letters of recommendation should speak to the applicant’s sincere interest in, and positive attitude toward, pursuing college-level study.
Required application materials (checklist)
1. Complete the electronic/fill-in application form, then print, sign, and date it. Submit only pages 3, 4, and 5. Handwritten applications are not accepted.
2. Membership documentation:
- Male applicants: include a photocopy of your CURRENT SUVCW membership card showing you are a Member or Associate of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
- Female applicants: include a photocopy of your CURRENT membership card demonstrating you are a Member or Associate of one or more of the Allied Orders (Woman’s Relief Corps — WRC; Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic — LGAR; Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861–1865 — DUVCW; or Auxiliary to SUVCW — ASUVCW). In addition, female applicants must be the daughter or granddaughter of a living SUVCW Member or Associate at the time the application is submitted.
3. Official academic transcript(s) — high school and/or college — submitted in a sealed envelope. The envelope flap must be countersigned by the school registrar (or equivalent), or the transcript must bear the school’s official seal.
4. Three letters of recommendation from people who know you well:
- One from a school counselor (or equivalent),
- One from a teacher of an academic course,
- One from a responsible person in your community.
Each recommendation must be placed in its own sealed envelope and the recommender must countersign the envelope flap.
Notes
- Ensure all sealed envelopes are intact and properly countersigned where required.
