Southern California Member Chapter Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
Objective
The Southern California Chapter of AIST offers scholarships to recognize and support high school seniors and college undergraduate students connected to the Chapter. The program provides financial assistance for attendance (full- or part-time) at any accredited college or university. Two distinct awards are offered: the AIST Member Scholarship and the Engineering Scholarship.
Awards
- Two (2) scholarships will be awarded annually.
- Each scholarship is worth US$1,500.
Eligibility
- General: Applicants must be accepted into an eligible full- or part-time program at an accredited college or university and either be attending a school in the Southern California Chapter area or reside within the Chapter’s area.
- Member Scholarship: Open to active AIST Southern California Chapter members, their immediate family (child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or spouse), or to AIST student members participating in the Material Advantage Student Program who meet the location/attendance requirement.
- Engineering Scholarship: Intended for students preparing for careers in engineering, the sciences, or majors related to iron and steel production. Eligible applicants include children, stepchildren, grandchildren, or spouses of active Southern California Chapter members, or AIST student members through the Material Advantage Student Program, provided they meet the location/attendance requirement. Applicants for this scholarship must be enrolled in an engineering field of study.
Selection
- Applications will be evaluated by the Southern California Chapter Executive Board.
- Awards are granted without consideration of financial need.
Terms and Conditions
- Scholarship funds must be used at an accredited college or university.
- Recipients must begin their course of study in the fall term of the same year the scholarship is awarded.
- Eligible students may be freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, or enrolled in graduate programs.
- For the Engineering Scholarship, enrollment in an engineering discipline is required.
- For the Member Scholarship, applicants must meet the family/member or student-member relationship described above and be attending or residing in the Chapter area.
- The AIST Foundation will issue the scholarship as a single lump-sum payment to the recipient’s college or university to be deposited in the student’s account.
- If a recipient’s enrollment or admission is delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Chapter Secretary must be notified immediately; such circumstances may lead to forfeiture of the award.
Required Application Materials
1. Completed scholarship application form.
2. Essay:
- Member Scholarship: A brief essay (250 words or less) describing your involvement in high school, college, or your professional life and explaining why you should receive the scholarship.
- Engineering Scholarship: An essay that demonstrates your interest in the steel industry, outlines your professional goals, and explains how your skills could contribute to the industry.
3. Current resume detailing work experience (emphasize field-related internships or jobs), extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and any other honors or scholarships.
4. Two (2) recommendation letters from a counselor, teacher, or professor.
5. A copy of current high school or college transcripts.
Applicants should ensure all required documents are complete and submitted according to the Chapter’s application instructions and deadlines.
