Scholarship for Diversity in Media

Trib Total Media is pleased to introduce the Scholarship for Diversity in Media, created to support outstanding students from culturally, ethnically, or racially diverse backgrounds who are pursuing studies in Journalism, Communication, or English Writing.
Purpose
The scholarship’s goal is to encourage and financially assist future journalists from underrepresented communities, helping broaden the range of voices and perspectives in local newsrooms.
Award Details
Each year, Trib Total Media will choose one student from Western Pennsylvania to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship assistance. Payments will be made in annual installments of up to $7,500. The award includes a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, after the recipient graduates, an offer of full-time employment.
Who Is Eligible
- High school seniors planning to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university, or students currently in their first year at a four-year institution, majoring in Journalism, English Writing, or Communication, and who will remain in that approved course of study through graduation.
- Individuals who meet the Equal Employment Opportunity Program definition of minority: African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander, or multi-racial.
- Primary residence must be in the Pittsburgh region, such as (but not limited to) Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland, or Washington counties.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale is required.
- Recipients must complete summer internship(s) with Trib Total Media.
Application Requirements
To apply, submit all of the following materials:
- A letter of application addressed to the Scholarship for Diversity in Media Selection Committee (email this letter to LBock@triblive.com).
- A fully completed scholarship application form.
- The applicant’s most recent official transcript showing cumulative GPA.
- Three letters of recommendation (no family members).
- Three to five work samples (examples include written pieces, photographs, or video).
In addition, all applicants will be required to:
- Take part in a personal interview with the selection committee.
- Complete a writing, spelling, and general-knowledge examination.
Special Provisions
Scholarship payments will be sent directly to the recipient’s college or university. Funds may not be used to repay loans.
Deadline and Submission Notes
All application materials must be postmarked by January 16, 2026. Applications postmarked after that date will not be reviewed. Incomplete applications or those submitted only by email (except for the application letter noted above) will not be considered. Direct questions to LBock@triblive.com.
