Introduction For more than 68 years the Lyons family has been connected to aviation. Through the Lyons Aviation Foundation, the family supports individuals aiming to become professional pilots by offering scholarships that promote aviation careers for young men and women. Scholarship recipients are chosen by the Foundation’s selection committee based strictly on merit. Criteria include academic performance, leadership experience, and community service. A clear expression of your dedication to a career in aviation is an important factor in the committee’s review. Key requirements and conditions - The scholarship recipient must obtain and provide proof of an FAA Third Class medical certificate before beginning any flight training. The medical will only be requested of finalists after selection; if a Third Class medical cannot be obtained, the scholarship cannot be awarded. - The awardee must commit to applying the scholarship funds toward earning a private pilot certificate within eight months of being named the recipient. - All flight training funded by the scholarship must take place at a local flight training center that is approved by the Lyons Aviation Foundation. - Before any flight training begins, the selected applicant must sign a Release of Liability form. Eligibility To be considered, applicants must meet the following: - Be between 16 and 24 years old as of April 25, 2026. - Be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident. - Demonstrate good moral character; applicants must not have been charged with or convicted of misdemeanors or felonies. - Be able to read, write, and speak English to the standards required by the FAA. - Be able to obtain an FAA Third Class medical certificate (verification requested only for selected applicants). Application submission instructions 1. Applications must be mailed (no electronic submissions will be accepted) to: - The Lyons Aviation Foundation - Attn: Scholarship Committee - P.O. Box 381 - Eastlake, CO 80614 2. For consideration for the 2026 scholarship, your application must be postmarked by January 17, 2026. Applications without a postmark or those postmarked after that date will be disqualified. The Foundation will notify the selected recipient in April 2026. Additional terms - All decisions by the Lyons Aviation Foundation are final. - Materials submitted become the property of the Lyons Aviation Foundation.
