Phi Alpha Theta Doctoral Student Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta
Phi Alpha Theta is continuing its annual Doctoral Student Scholarship program to support graduate student members engaged in advanced study. Eligible applicants are verified members who are pursuing a Ph.D. in History or Library Science–Archives and who will have passed their general examinations on or before February 16, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered for one of the following awards:
- John T. Maple Scholarship — $1,000
- John Pine Memorial Award — $1,000
- Two additional scholarships — $850 each
Required application materials
To be considered, your submission must include all of the following items:
- Completed application form
- Official transcripts: one official copy from the institution that granted your baccalaureate degree and one official copy from each institution where you completed graduate coursework
- Curriculum vitae or résumé
- Writing sample (5 pages, double-spaced)
- Three letters of recommendation — originals only (one from each recommender you list)
- Dissertation prospectus, maximum 3 double-spaced pages
- Letter from your History Department chair verifying that you are not enrolled in an online degree program

Important notes
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all required documents arrive by the deadline. Incomplete packets, late submissions, or applications for which Phi Alpha Theta membership cannot be verified will be ineligible for consideration.
