GIAR Grandmother’s First-Generation Scholarship

The scholarship funds the undergraduate or graduate college education of first-generation young women of Portuguese, Mexican, Central American or South American ancestry, under the age of 25. The term first-generation is defined here as a young woman who has immigrated to the United States of America and become a naturalized citizen or the daughter of an immigrant of Portuguese, Mexican, Central American and South American Ancestry. The student must be a resident of Nevada or Hawaii.
This scholarship is a one-time award of up to $5,000 based on need (which will be verified through your attached FAFSA and Financial Aid documents). One scholarship may be awarded to cover the full cost of attendance at UNR (up to $25,000), also based on need. All awards have the potential to be renewed with reapplication.
The GIAR Grandmothers Scholarship is designed for students who:
- are residents of northern Nevada (typically described as Tonopah and north) or the state of Hawaii
- have graduated or are a graduating senior from high school with a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.0
- have been accepted to an accredited U.S. College or University
- agree to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and provide a copy of unofficial transcripts at the end of each semester they are receiving a scholarship
Applications must include:
- transcript
- proof of enrollment or acceptance to a U.S. College or University
- one-page essay written by the student answering the following prompt: “We did then, what we knew how to do, but now we know more, so we can do better” ~author unknown. How does this quote speak of your past and inspire your future?
