Introduction
Wellroot Family Services administers a scholarship program to support students who intend to pursue further education at accredited colleges, universities, or vocational-technical schools in the United States.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Wellroot Family Services Scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a U.S.-based high school senior or graduate, a current postsecondary undergraduate, or a graduate student.
- Plan to enroll full time in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States for the entire upcoming academic year.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Some individual Funds within the program include additional requirements; please consult the Awards section or the individual Fund descriptions below for those specifics.
Award details
- Award amounts range from $1,000 to $3,500, varying by Fund.
- Awards are one-time only (not renewable), but eligible students may reapply each year.
- Each student may receive no more than one award per year.
- Awards are intended for undergraduate or graduate study only.
How recipients are chosen
Scholarship recipients are evaluated on the following factors:
- Academic achievement
- Leadership and involvement in school and community activities
- Work experience
- Statement of educational and career goals
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- An online recommendation
Financial need is not a selection factor. As noted above, some Funds apply additional eligibility considerations; review individual Fund descriptions for details.
Scholarship Funds and specific criteria
B & R Phillips Fund
- Eight (8) awards of $3,000 each.
- Additional requirement: Applicant must be a Wellroot Family Services (formerly UMCH) resident. Preference to those who are, or have been, affiliated with or have received assistance from Wellroot Family Services of the North or South Georgia conference.
Emily Anne Burgess Estate Fund
- Ten (10) awards of $2,500 each.
- Additional requirement: Demonstrated interest in music, elementary education, or STEM.
Holt Fund
- Ten (10) awards of $2,000 each.
- Additional requirement: Recipients will be referred by Wellroot Family Services; award amounts will be determined by Wellroot Family Services.
Jack & Wanda Reaves Education
- Six (6) awards of $2,000 each.
Lee Corvette Fund
- Five (5) awards of $3,500 each.
- Additional requirement: Applicant must be a Wellroot Family Services (formerly UMCH) resident. Preference to those who are, or have been, affiliated with or have received assistance from Wellroot Family Services of the North or South Georgia conference.
Moore Memorial
- Twelve (12) awards of $2,000 each.
- Additional requirement: Recipient must be enrolled at a Methodist-affiliated college.
N S Elizer
- Four (4) awards of $3,000 each.
- Additional requirements: Must be a Wellroot Family Services (formerly UMCH) resident attending Young Harris College, Reinhardt College, or Oxford College of Emory University. Preference to those who are, or have been, affiliated with or have received assistance from Wellroot Family Services of the North or South Georgia conference.
Patterson Higher Education
- Four (4) awards of $3,000 each.
- Additional requirement: Applicant must be a Wellroot Family Services (formerly UMCH) resident. Preference to those who are, or have been, affiliated with or have received assistance from Wellroot Family Services of the North or South Georgia conference.
RC Carlton Education
- Two (2) awards of $2,000 each.
Reuel & Naomi S. Burgess
- Five (5) awards of $1,500 each.
- Additional requirement: Demonstrated interest in music, elementary education, or STEM.
Reuel A. & Naomi S. Burgess Fund
- Thirty-five (35) awards of $2,400 each.
- Additional requirement: Demonstrated interest in music or STEM.
WL Monroe Sr. Trust
- Two (2) awards of $2,000 each. One award will be given to a male applicant and one to a female applicant.
Selection process and data sharing
Selection of scholarship recipients is conducted by Scholarship America. Wellroot Family Services officers and employees do not participate in the selection process; applicants must accept Scholarship America’s decisions as final.
Wellroot Family Services will share residents’ and North and South Georgia assistance contact information (Case Worker, Life Coach, and DFCS email addresses) with the program Sponsor. Those listed Case Workers, Life Coaches, and DFCS contacts will be cc’d on all Scholarship America email communications.
