DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
Scholarship Sponsored by Department of Energy
Overview The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) supports U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who intend to pursue continuous, full-time Ph.D. study at an accredited U.S. university. Applicants working in engineering or in the physical, computer, mathematical, or life sciences are especially encouraged to apply. The fellowship offers up to four years of financial support; continuation is subject to annual renewal. Who may apply (eligibility measured at time of application) Eligible applicants include: - Undergraduate seniors planning to begin Ph.D. study - Current master's students (note: recipients holding a master’s must begin their Ph.D. at a different institution in the fall term that coincides with the start of DOE CSGF funding) - First-year graduate students - Individuals who are employed at the time of application - Other candidates who are matriculating into graduate school Who is not eligible The following applicants are ineligible: - Graduate students who are in their second year or beyond at the time of application - Students pursuing a simultaneous professional doctoral degree that accompanies the Ph.D. (for example, M.D./Ph.D., J.D./Ph.D., D.V.M./Ph.D., etc.) Enrollment, research and summer expectations While funded, fellows must be enrolled full time as graduate students at an accredited U.S. institution and perform research aligned with DOE interests. Summers must be devoted to full-time activities that advance degree completion, such as conducting research, taking coursework, or participating in a practicum assignment at a DOE facility. Teaching and departmental duties (Freedom to focus on research) The fellowship is intended to maximize focus on research and coursework. Departments must waive teaching obligations beyond a single academic term so fellows are not required to undertake excessive teaching or comparable service. Annual renewal and funding conditions Support is renewed each year. Fellows must submit an online renewal application that documents: - satisfactory academic standing, - progress toward completion of the approved program-of-study coursework, - completion of a laboratory practicum experience, and - research activities in fields relevant to the DOE. The duration of an award can be influenced by the fellow’s academic status and the projected funding level. The DOE works to provide adequate graduate funding; therefore, any additional graduate responsibilities (for example, a teaching assistantship) require prior approval from the Krell Institute. Fellows are permitted to accept scholarships, prizes, and other payments (including veterans’ benefits) provided they do not obligate the fellow to perform a service.
