William Galey Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by American Physiological Society
Overview
The Teaching of Physiology Section’s William Galey Scholarship, administered by the American Physiological Society (APS), offers professional development funding for up to three recipients. Eligible applicants — graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or early- to mid-career faculty who are newly moving into teaching roles — may use the award to either:
- Attend the Center for Physiology Education’s “From Concept to Classroom (C2C)” pre-conference workshop held before the American Physiology Summit, or
- Enroll in the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course.
There are separate entries in the APS Awards portal for each option. The scholarship honors the memory of William Galey, PhD, and his dedication to the training and mentorship of physiology educators. Read more about William Galey.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be current APS members whose primary affiliation is with the Teaching of Physiology Section.
- Be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or an early- or mid-career faculty member transitioning into a teaching-focused career.
Application materials
The application must include the following items:
1. A one-page letter of intent outlining your career objectives and explaining how the selected program will advance your professional development and training.
2. Curriculum vitae.
3. One letter of support from a mentor, principal investigator, advisor, or department chair who is familiar with your career goals. This letter must comment on how participation in the chosen professional development activity will support the applicant’s training and career plans.
Applications that contain extra documents beyond those listed or that are missing required items will be disqualified (for example, submission of a third letter of recommendation or a blank CV).
Award conditions
- Recipients choosing the C2C pre-conference workshop must register for and attend both the workshop and the American Physiology Summit to receive funding. Those awardees will be invited to the Teaching of Physiology Section banquet during the Summit and will be asked to participate in the review and selection process for the following year. The award will cover registration costs for these events and will be reimbursed from the award funds.
- Recipients selected for the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual course are strongly encouraged, though not required, to attend the Summit. The course registration fee will be reimbursed from the award funds.
Submission instructions
- There are separate application forms for each award option; you must submit the appropriate application for the program you wish to attend.
- Applications are accepted only through the APS online submission system.
